Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau, on the 8th June 1810. His father personnality, an editor and publisher, had on the composer a dominant influence. At the age of thirteen he gave hmself to literature that he considered to be his true vocation. But he had started piano playing very early and showed an extraordinary gift. At his fathers death in 1826, his mother misquided him in pushing him to study law at Leipzig. But the call to music became louder and louder. He discovered the works of Bach, for whom he conserved an admiration without limits. Believing himself destined to be a virtuosa pianist, Schuman was obliged to renounce this after losing the use of his rigth hand due to a device that bed invented to immobalise the fourth finger during exercices. He became therefore, exclusively a composer. The piano was his confident, his favourite instrument, for which he wrote sone of the most beautiful pieces of piano literature (Roi le carnaval, les tudes symphoniques, la fantaisie, les kreisleriana) etc...
Being a victim of depressive heredity, exhausted by the overwork, Schumann fell to schizophrenia. After having attempted to commit suicide, he was interned at the Hospital of Eidenich near Bonn. Robert Schumann died there on 29th July 1856.
